Wild final night in the Ohio

BENTON — The possible scenarios heading into the final night of play in the River to River-Ohio had anywhere from one to four teams earning at least a share of the conference title. That final number ended up being three.

Murphysboro could’ve clinched the crown outright with a win at Benton, but the Rangers staked their claim to part of the title with a come-from-behind 54-44 win.

The Rangers’ win opened the door for Massac County and Herrin to also grab shares with wins. The Patriots took care of their business, beating West Frankfort 68-45. Harrisburg prevented the Tigers from joining the celebration as the Bulldogs beat Herrin 69-38.

Early on it appeared as Murphysboro would be the only team celebrating as the Red Devils built a 20-10 second quarter lead. The Rangers closed the half on a 12-3 run to pull within one at 23-22 by halftime.

Benton’s run continued through much of the third as the Rangers not only grabbed the lead, but extended that lead to seven. Then it was Murphysboro’s turn to rally, as the Red Devils rattled off seven straight points, tying the game at 35 early in the fourth.

The Rangers outscored the Red Devils 19-9 the rest of the way for the win and right to claim a piece of the Ohio pie.

Reece Johnson scored 13 of his game high 19 points in the second half to lead Benton. Wyatt McClintock added ten. Dezmond Clark led Murphysboro with 15.

Murphysboro will host a 2A regional next week, while Benton will head to Carmi-White County.
