CARBONDALE — The River to River girl golf championships presented a tale of two divisions. Massac County continued its dominance on the Ohio side, while Anna-Jonesboro became the fourth different champion in as many years.

The Lady Patriots once again used a balanced attack to win their seventh straight SIRR Ohio title and 22nd in the last 26 years. Led by medalist McKinnley Korte’s 81, Massac County had five golfers shoot in the 80s. There were only seven scores in the 80s in the entire field.

It was a different story on the Mississippi side, where Anna-Jonesboro won its first title since 2006. The Lady Wildcats held off Nashville by seven strokes to take home the title. Mississippi medalist Marlee Smith led the A-J attack with an 89.

You may remember Smith from a feature we did back in December. She was diagnosed last spring with T-cell leukemia. She was able to make it back to the golf course last fall but was still very weak. The experiences last year made this year’s victory even sweeter.
