MARION — Marion junior Sarah Capel admits this season has not gone accordingly to plan, over and above dealing with all the changes caused by the pandemic. A strong summer hasn’t always translated to results this fall, but Capel says
she has “lived at Kokopelli” since finding out her school was hosting a 2A regional.

That hard work paid off Wednesday as Capel carded a 3-over 74 to edge Mascoutah’s Sophia Florek by a shot to win a regional championship. The Wildcats finished three shots out of second, so they will not advance as a team. Capel’s teammate, Baylee Kelly, finished tied for the sixth with an 80. Capel and Kelly advance as individuals to next week’s Champaign Sectional.
