Centralia captures tennis sectional title

CARBONDALE — A strong final day helped the Centralia Orphans edge the host Terriers for the Carbondale 1A Boys Tennis Sectional championship.

The final four individuals and doubles teams left standing after Friday had all clinched a trip to state. Saturday was the sectional championship for individuals and doubles teams, as well as the overall team title.

Fairfield senior Jacob Britt came in seeded third. He beat Carbondale’s Kabeer Ahuja and Curt Robinson on the final day to take home the singles title. Britt needed three sets to get by Ahuja, then rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win in the finals. Ahuja defeated Centralia Louis Lepage 6-3, 6-3 in the third place match.

Centralia’s Ethan Dobbs and Brock Milburn beat the Herrin freshmen duo of Michael Cagle and Keegan Weber in the doubles finals 6-4, 7-6. The Orphans other doubles team of Reed Dearing and Dane Burrus downed Carbondale’s Sam Baker and Jackson Beaupre for third.

Centralia finished with 27 team points, two better than Carbondale. Fairfield was third, and Herrin took fourth.

The boys state tennis tournament will start Thursday near Chicago.
