Fairfield prepares to defend BDC crown…again

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Mules have put together quite a run during the past five football seasons. The Mules are 44-5 during that span, including the current streak of 35 straight Black Diamond Conference wins.

Things have been going so well, Justin Townsend’s team finished 7-0 during the six-game, COVID spring season that ended in April (the Mules received a forfeit win from Vienna/Goreville and then beat Harrisburg as a replacement on the schedule that week).

Fairfield has won or shared five straight BDC titles, including last spring when the Mules shared the conference championship with Johnston City. The teams did not face each other due to the condensed schedule, and both finished the season unbeaten.

The Mules feature 17 seniors this season, with four starters returning on both the offensive and defensive lines. Fairfield will have an entirely new starting backfield, although Townsend says it’s a group that has game experience, just at other positions.

Fairfield will open the season August 27 at Eldorado.
