Four different schools win SIRR Cross Country championships

HERRIN — After running the two divisions at different sites last year due to Covid protocols, the Southern Illinois River to River ran combined cross country conference championships at Herrin City Park Thursday. Runners from Mississippi and Ohio schools ran at the same time with results sorted by division. The end result was four different schools taking home titles, led by the medalists of each group.

Du Quoin senior Olivia Phillips won the Mississippi medalist honors, posting the day’s top girls’ time of 17:53. The Lady Indians’ five scoring times were in the top 12 of the Mississippi finishers to edge Pinckneyville for the title. The Lady Panthers had five in the top 15.

Murphysboro freshman Miah Gilmore edged out another freshman, Herrin’s Ellary Blakey, for Ohio medalist honors with a time of 18:56. The Red Devils placed five in the top 14, including four of the top eight to best Benton for the spot.

Benton sophomore Gavin Genisio posted the day’s best time, winning the Ohio race with a time of 14:29. The Rangers wound up with six of the top eight spots to take the Ohio team title.

Pinckneyville sophomore Isaac Teel posted the top individual time on the Mississippi side with a 14:47.
Teel led five Panthers in the top 11 Mississippi finishers to claim the team title.
