Comer continues to pile up wins

CARTERVILLE — It’s been quite a run for Pope County sophomore Ahry Comer. Actually, quite a few runs. Saturday, Comer remained unbeaten on the season, winning the Carterville 1A Cross Country Regional championship by 59 seconds over Anna-Jonesboro’s Brody Denny. Comer finished with a time of 17:08.

Murphysboro’s Miah and Kayden Gilmore took third and fifth with Carterville’s Molly Robertson finishing between them in fourth. The Lions edged the Red Devils by one point for the team title. A-J was third. Sparta and Vienna also will advance to the Wesclin Sectional.

Red Bud senior Nick Fehr won the boys race with a time of 15:30, 10 seconds faster than Steeleville’s Christian Rees. Carterville’s Sean Taylor was third with Steeleville’s Cayton Cratch and Evan Reitz rounding out the top five.

The Warriors put five in the top nine individually to cruise to the team title. Red Bud was second. A-J, Carterville, Marissa, Vienna, and Pope County also will advance to the sectional. (Complete Carterville 1A Regional results)

Elsewhere, at Benton, Du Quoin’s Olivia Phillips won medalist honors helping the Lady Indians win the girls’ team title as well. Pinckneyville finished second. Breese Mater Dei, Hamilton County, Christ Our Rock Lutheran, Benton and Breese Central also will advances.

Benton’s Gavin Genisio set a new course record in winning medalist honors with a 14:05. Pinckneyville Isaac Teel and Du Quoin’s Landen Swiney also broke 15:00. The Rangers edged the Panthers for the team title. Mater Dei, Nashville, Du Quoin, Webber, and Wesclin all will advance to the sectional. (Complete Benton 1A Regional results)

Marshall edged the hosts to win the Robinson 1A regional championship. Newton, Effingham St. Anthony, Salem, Dieterich, and Neogo also will advance to the Decatur St. Teresa Sectional. Marshall’s Brooklyn Bender was the medalist.

Flora’s Isaac Stanford was the medalist on the boys side. Newton cruised to the team title. Fairfield tied with Robinson for second. Salem, Marshall, St. Anthony, and Cumberland also will advance. (Complete Robinson 1A Regional results)

And in 2A, Mascoutah held off Waterloo to take the girls’ team title. Highland, Triad, Civic Memorial, and Carbondale will all advance to the Decatur MacArthur Sectional. Waterloo’s Angelynn Kanyuck was the medalist.

Marion won the boys’ team title with Civic Memorial, Highland, Mascoutah, Carbondale, and Waterloo also advancing. Carbondale’s Alex Partlow was the medalist, winning by 37 seconds. (Complete Highland 2A Regional results)

Mahomet-Seymour swept the boys and girls team titles at the Olney Regional. Champaign Central, Champaign Centennial, Effingham, Urbana, and Charleston also will advance for the girls. Mahomet-Seymour’s Ava Boyd was the girls’ medalist.

Champaign Central, Urbana, Mt. Vernon, Olney and Mattoon all will advance for the boys. Mattoon’s Brock Davee was the boys’ medalist. (Complete Olney 2A Regional results)
