Murphy picks up milestone win in Duster Thomas opener

PINCKNEYVILLE — Murphysboro head boys basketball coach Daryl Murphy knew there was a chance he’d reach a milestone this season–500 wins as the Red Devils’ head coach. He just didn’t think it would happen this quickly.

Murphy’s Red Devils remained unbeaten on the season, dispatching Okawville 60-27 in the opening round of the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic for win number 500 with Murphysboro.

Murphy admits it’s quite a challenge to win that many games at the same school, but he credits consistency with his staff, as assistant coaches Ben Doggan and Matt Decker have been by his side nearly the entire journey.

Murphy also points out that he’s been blessed by a lot of talent throughout the years. This year’s leader Calvon Clemons once again led the way with a game high 15 points. Karmelo Abernathy added ten.

The Red Devils will face Steeleville Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
