Marion wins first wrestling regional championship

MT. VERNON — The Marion Wildcats are celebrating the school’s first wrestling regional championship after winning the Mt. Vernon 2A Regional Saturday. Mattoon was second while the host Rams finished third.

The top three individuals in each weight class move on to the sectional. The Wildcats will send 11 individuals to next week’s Mahomet-Seymour 2A Sectional. Marion had four individual regional champs: Tate Miller (120), Ricky Wade (132), Nate Dampier (152), and Kanye Gunn (285). Four others lost in their championship matches: Riddick Cook (106), Caleb Ohnesorge (160), Aden White (170), and Malekei Weatherly (182). Three Wildcats won their third place matches: Brennan Vogt (113), Aaron Dungy (126), and Levi Tanner (220).

Three other area wrestlers won individual regional championships. Carbondale’s Isaiah Duckworth won the 160 pound weight class. Mt. Vernon’s Maddux Randall won in 170, while fellow Ram Jared Shafer won in 182.

There are 14 other area sectional qualifiers. At 120, Centralia’s Nate Lecrone and Carbondale’s Gabriel Roman finished second and third. Mt. Vernon’s Ethan Verdeyen was second at 126. At 132, Carbondale’s Isaac Smith was second. At 138, Mt. Vernon’s Bradden Davis and Carbondale’s Aiden Murphy finished second and third. Carbondale’s Thomas Imboden was third at 145, while teammate Brendan Banz was second at 152. Mt. Vernon’s Mylze Cammack was third at 160. Carbondale’s Ryan Hawk was third at 182. Carbondale Aiden Taylor and Mt. Vernon’s Mason Randall finished second and third at 195. Mt. Vernon’s Ethan Rivera (220) and Travis Sanders (285) both finished second.
