WATERLOO — The Benton Rangers consider the final three weeks of the season to be a grand slam. They’ve won the first three legs–the conference tournament, a regional championship, and now a sectional championship. The final leg awaits this weekend in Normal with the 2A State Tournament.

The Rangers won the Waterloo 2A Sectional by 19 strokes Monday at the Acorns Golf Links with a score of 296. Mattoon was second, a shot better than Glenwood.

Benton had three finish in the top four individually. Sophomore River Stilley won a 3-way sudden death playoff with teammate and fellow sophomore Kash Cantrell and Salem’s Jairen Stroud. Stilley birdied the first extra hole. Cantrell and Stroud each parred to tie for second. The three carded even par rounds of 72.

Rangers’ senior Cy Norman just missed a birdie putt on 18 which would’ve made for a 4-way playoff. Norman finished fourth with a 1-over 73. Jeremiah Kay posted Benton’s fourth score with a 79 from the sixth spot in the Rangers’ lineup.

Carbondale’s Ian Davis shot a 3-over 75 to finish tied for sixth individually and earn a trip back to state.

The 2A State Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal.
