Former Terrier excels on the mat, in the classroom

Former Carbondale Terrier wrestling standout Cameron Caffey is leading the Michigan State Spartans on and off the mats.

Caffey, who posted a team best 27-7 record this season as a redshirt sophomore, earned the Spartans’ Scholar-Athlete Award, given to the individual from each team who maintains the highest cumulative grade point average. To be eligible, the athlete must be at least junior academic status and have received a minimum of one varsity letter. Caffey, who is a computer engineering major, earned Highest Honors (3.75-4.00 GPA) on the Michigan State Intercollegiate Athletics Honor Roll.

Caffey earned his second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament with a second place finish last month at the Big 10 Tournament. He was a sixth seed in his 184 pound weight class but didn’t get a chance to wrestle, as the NCAA canceled the rest of winter sports as well as all spring sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
